How can you talk so your child will listen — and listen so they’ll talk?

Teenagers today are growing up in a world where exposure to drugs and alcohol is often just one click or conversation away. As a parent or carer, knowing how to talk to your child about these issues is vital — but not always easy.

Topics will include:

  • Where, when and how young people are most commonly exposed to drugs and alcohol

  • What you and your child need to know about the risks and effects

  • What influences young people’s choices — and how you can too

  • Practical strategies for talking, listening, and building trust

Speaker Fiona Spargo-Mabbs OBE is a leading voice in drug education, Chair of the Drug Education Forum, and a member of the government’s Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs. The Daniel Spargo- Mabbs Foundation was set up in 2014 by Fiona and Tim Spargo-Mabbs after the tragic death of their 16 year old son Daniel as a result of an accidental overdose of ecstasy. Fiona now works passionately with families, schools and policymakers to reduce harm and save lives.

He said, she said!!

From toddlers to teenagers: Listen to how to you can help your child negotiate their sibling relationships and see how far you should get involved.

One of the toughest things about being a parent is helping our children negotiate these first peer relationships with humour and sensitivity. The talk considers issues like when we step in and when we give them space to sort things out between themselves; how we help them repair their relationships after a fall out and how we lay strong foundations for these most important of family relationships. After all these are likely to be the longest relationships they have in their lifetime.

let’s talk about Porn

Pornography is more widespread and accessible than it has ever been at any other time in History. Its content is also increasingly more extreme and often violent. The average age of children exposed to Pornography in the UK is 11 years old and 90% of young people aged 8-16 have watched porn online.

It is easier than ever for young people to seek out or even stumble upon pornographic material online, so it is vital that we have these difficult conversations with our children about porm and its harmful effects. Islan Van Tricht aims to provide information, tools and advice on how to tackle this tricky topic with our young people - how to open the discussion and how to help them understand what healthy sex and relationships look like.

Parenting Teens Webinar - Creating a Consent Culture

Following the rapid review Ofsted reported on in June as a result of the 'Everyone's Invited expose' in March, the results show that sexual harassment and online sexual abuse is such a routine part of our children's lives that they don't see any point in challenging or reporting it. How has it got to this..... Listen to Bekah Legg to find out how to start a conversation with our kids to help them understand that this is not 'normal' and attitudes and behaviours need to change. The talk looks at combating coercion, standing up to unhelpful peer pressure, helping our kids treat one another with respect and what consent actually means.
